Bonaparte's Retreat

This version of "Bonaparte's Retreat" was transcribed by Ruth Crawford Seeger from a recording of the playing of fiddler William Hamilton Stepp (1875-1957) made by John Lomax for the Library of Congress on October 25, 1937 in Saylersville, Kentucky. Aaron Copeland used this version of the tune for the "Hoe-Down" movement of his 1942 ballet score "Rodeo." The recording is available on the 2000 Rounder CD "American Fiddle Tunes."
