The Siren Sisters String Band
by Glenn Weiser

Formed in 1990, The Siren Sisters were a noteworthy Albany, NY-based alt. country band fronted by vocalists Caroline Johnston (now our Motherjudge), and Kathy “K.K” Bush.
    I played with them for
about two years, performing old-time string band songs, golden-era country hits by artists like Hank Williams Sr. and Roy Acuff, and the Sirens' way cool originals.

When I joined them in 1990 as a multi-instrumentalist on guitar, banjo, mandolin and harmonica, the lineup consisted of Caroline and Kathy backed by Pat Mullaly on acoustic guitar and dobro, Brian Wellbrock on electric guitar, Joe Pasco on electric bass and Dave Owens on drums. We mostly played local bars like Bogie’s and QE2, and had a sizeable following.
Among the best bands ever to emerge from the Albany music scene, the Sirens had strong songwriting by Mullaly and Johnston. The contrast between Caroline’s throaty, powerhouse alto and K.K’s sultry, classic country singing style also provided a broad vocal spectrum.
This page preserves a bit of the Siren Sisters’ brief but memorable run with nine MP3s of demo and studio recordings featuring my playing on harmonica, mandolin, guitar, and banjo. Pat Mullay, who went on to play with bluegrass mandolin legend Frank Wakefield, plays fine flatpicking guitar and dobro solos, as you'll hear.
I thank Caroline Johnston and Pat Mullaly for their permission to post their songs here. Composers of covers are identified in the credits below; I'll be determining the Sirens' songwriting credits soon.
